West Bengal government has taken up a slew of projects to develop Sagar Island at the confluence of the river Ganga and Bay of Bengal as a major tourist destination. Two virgin beaches will be developed as part of the programme.

"Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will on October 30 inaugurate 20 cottages having all modern amenities to cater to high-end tourists at Sagar Island," Bardhan told PTI here.

Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden, Sikkim

Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden is one of the very popular tourist hangouts in Sikkim, 24 kilometers away from Gangtok and is easily accessible by road. Established in the year 1987 the garden is now preserved by the Forest Department. Blessed with mesmerizing beauty, Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden is full of greenery and serenity. It is located near Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim. It is a home to several species of plants, trees and flowers. Beautiful Flowers and Orchids of the Himalayan region are present in abundance here. Its ideal location at a high altitude ranging from 1800 m to 2220 m is the reason for its rich variety of plants and flowers. The green house in the garden is a home to several varieties of Orchids. Good news for children there is a small area in the garden which is dedicated to children. The Garden is a concoction of well-nursed tropical and temperate plants. A huge greenhouse has been erected in the garden, wherever different kinds of Orchids are mature. A concrete pavement across the garden results in the hidden areas of the park and assures a stress-free saunter. On the opposite hill, one can see the rambling town of Gangtok. The botanical garden has several gardens inside. There are some waterfalls inside the garden. It also houses a beautiful lake that covers 17 acres of land. Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden of Sikkim is a perfect retreat from the noisy and crowded city life. Moreover, the serene nature and the calm and pleasant weather make it the finest spot for spending some quality time with your near and dear ones. You can enjoy the scenic beauty of the garden using the paddleboats available here. In addition, especially for children, a small recreational centre has also been made inside the garden equipped with see-saw, swings and merry-go-round. The best time to visit this garden is between the months of March to late May and from October to mid-December.
