West Bengal government has taken up a slew of projects to develop Sagar Island at the confluence of the river Ganga and Bay of Bengal as a major tourist destination. Two virgin beaches will be developed as part of the programme.

"Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will on October 30 inaugurate 20 cottages having all modern amenities to cater to high-end tourists at Sagar Island," Bardhan told PTI here.

The region is surrounded by the mighty Himalayan chain of Mt Kanchendzonga, the world's third tallest mountain, and offers many trekking options. It is said that trekking in India originated in Darjeeling. Darjeeling has perhaps the most spectacular treks to offer along its inviting natural beauty and the magnificent hills. The 'Singalila Trek' in this hill town is one of the very renowned trekking trails which enable a person to discover the passion of Himalayan region some of which are unmarred by humans. Darjeeling internationally acclaimed as one of the best hill resorts is also a paradise for trekkers and adventure seekers. Trekking in Darjeeling is an experience which no lover of nature should miss. It takes one to places where nature is yet in her premival majesty. It brings one face to face with sublime grandeur of the Himalayas. Low altitude treks in the lower regions of Darjeeling are quiet easy and are particularly recommended for those tourists who like to take up a stroll at a leisurely pace. The Kalimpong-Relli trek through golden paddy fields, the Kurseong-Namsu trail through tea gardens and the Kurseong-Mirik trek are the main trails through low altitude areas.

One of the famous trekking routes comprise of the Darjeeling-Batast-Tonglo-Sandakphu. It comprises of 6/7 days moderate trekking from Maneshanjang which is 26km by road from Darjeeling and ideal for views along a standard trail. A popular trekking route from Darjeeling, this trek takes one to Sandakphu and Phalut from where one can have breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga and Mt. Everest. Another famous trekking route is the Singalila Trek. This trek takes place in the Singalila range in Darjeeling which starts from Maneybhanjang, goes to Meghma, Toughu, Gairibas, Sandakphu, and Phalut. Another adventurous high altitude trek done in Darjeeling is in the Kalimpong region from Relli, Pankhasari, and Neora to the highest point in the areas, Rochella at 3,400m. From here it is a steady descent to Tangta, Jhalong along the foothills to Samsing. Trekkers can enjoy the natural panorama of exotic varieties of Himalayan Flora, bird and wildlife that can be seen along this route. Most of the trek routes in Darjeeling are easier, you need not to be a professional climber, and you just need to have the will to walk along the narrow routes of the hills and an enthusiasm to view the serenity and sublime of the mountains.

Basically there are two trekking seasons in Darjeeling, first one begins from middle of March and ends around first week of June. Additionally the other season starts around last of September which goes on till the month of December. As the trekking regions in Darjeeling ranges from 1000m to 4000m thus one should carry suitable clothes according to this. Trekkers hut for food is found at every 15km or so. But it is advisable to carry snacks, biscuits, and waters as you find some places where water and food are not available.
